BRAIN-EATING AMOEBA naegleria fowleri free-living amoeboflagellate, a pathogenic parasite found in temperate and stagnant freshwater. It is spread nasally and not buccally. From the nose it reaches the brain, where it begins to destroy brain tissue, almost always causing death in a fulminating way. It usually kills within a week.
